I have a 1999 Mercury Sable almost completely redone, and the radio does not work. Can I buy just any average radio from Wal-Mart and have it installed, or does it have to be a particular size/wiring/etc.? My uncle who is redoing the car is getting a cheap used radio claiming that it’s the only one he can find. It happens that his friend is the owner of the shop. Just want to know if I am getting gypped or not.
Joe, different vehicles require different sizes when it comes to car stereos. Some cars require a single DIN radio, some cars require a 1.5 DIN radio and some vehicles require a double DIN stereo. If your car can fit a double DIN radio, you can retro fit a 1.5 DIN or single DIN radio with an aftermarket radio dash kit. If your car can fit a 1.5 radio, you can retro fit a single DIN radio with an aftermarket radio dash kit. Hope this helps. Good luck.
I just got a really nice subwoofer from a friend of mine. It has two generic silver speaker wires coming out of the back. How would I go about hooking it up? also if I just split one of the wires going to a speaker in my trunk and connect the sub, will that work or will it damage my car/battery/electrical system?
Devon, you cannot just hook up the subwoofer wires to the speaker wires in your car. You need to purchase an amplifier to power the subwoofer. Our advise would be for you to go to an experienced audio installer and have them put in your subwoofer. It does take some wiring experience to install a sub woofer. Hope this helps. I brought my 1999 Merc. Sable to Lincoln/ Merc. dealer to have a new alternator installed. After job was completed the mechanic said my radio wasn’t working. It worked before he touched my car. What could have gone wrong? I don’t trust the dealer to fix it. Any suggestions. 6 months ago without a radio.
George, it sounds like your radio isn’t getting any power. Double check ALL your fuses because it is possible that your mechanic could have blown a couple of fuses without knowing while doing the electrical repairs. Hope this helps. Good luck.
