Michele, you should be able to dig around and see if your 2001 Volkswagen Jetta factory stereo harness is still connected. If your stock radio harness is not there then you will have to get someone to wire in a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta OEM stereo harness to work with your factory stereo. Hope this helps. Good luck with your 2001 Volkswagen Jetta stereo troubleshooting.
I have a 2001 vw jetta 1.8 t that came with a factory Clarion IV CD with cassette with steering wheel controls. I had a panasonic cd/mp3 player installed and the installer said that he did not cut the steering wheel controls, just tucked them behind. I am putting my jetta up for sale as I have purchased a BMW and want to reinstall the factory stereo. The problem is when I (easily) removed my panasonic stereo, the wiring adapter end? does NOT fit into the jetta factory stereo. Did the installer switch wiring harnesses and throw my old one away? (He says he gave me everything back and I did NOT get any wiring of any kind.. just the stereo). For whatever lucky reason, the times I have had another stereo and reinstalled the factory one once (didn’t have any problems before the panasonic installer)… my stereo does NOT ask for a code.. Thank God because whoever owned the car when I bought it… thoughtfully took the card out of my book! I’m HOPING someone can tell me if it’s safe to dig around deep into those wires to see if the old connector/adapter may be in there… (I don’t have the battery disconnected)… or if I need to get a different (orig) wiring harness? PLEASE HELP… I am moving and need to sell this car ASAP! Thank you anyone who can help me! Michele :-)
Being that they are pretty much the same car I wouldn’t think the stereo in your golf is much different. The stereo having something to do with the smog or smog pump is the craziest thing I’ve ever heard. I know some of the newer cars like the chevrolets 2005 or 2006 and up interact with stereo, but I’m pretty positive our models don’t. Especially since the jetta I have hasn’t had the factory stereo in it for quite a few years. I’m friends with the last 3 guys that have owned it and there has been a couple of different after market stereos in it. It hasn’t effected anything. Deffenently not the check engine light. And there hasn’t been a code that I’ve seen that couldn’t be read off the check engine light as long as they were using the correct code reader.
On my comment…… for the record I meant to say I was trying to pair up the speakers for 4ohm not 8ohm. I didn’t catch that till after I sent it. I haven’t got around to it but at the time I didn’t have a multimeter handy, but I’ll check it out when I get the chance. Just thought someone might have known the answer off hand.
Hi, My husband recently installed an after market stereo into my 2001 VW Golf 1.8T (I originally had the Monsoon). He was told that he will need to reconnect the old stereo when the car goes in for a smog test. SHortly after, my check engine light came on and my mechanic could not read the code. He said it was because of the new stereo and that the stock stereo is used for communications for VW cars. My check engine light is still on, I do not know what the code is from and I’d like to get it repaired…I just don’t want to give up my new stereo (it has ipod/USB ports) Any suggestions or recommendations would be much appreciated.
Thank you
