  1. Thanks, I finally got everything to work properly. Bought an alpine and installed it, I have a quick question, can i put 6x9s in the rear or do they have to go in the front? cause I know the fronts are for 6 by nines and do these aftermarket speakers go right in? Any modifications? And my door panels rattle every time i hit a bump. I need these problems fixed. Also my 4runner is misfiring.. I’m thinking it’s the coil pack or spark plug wires? Cause i just replaced the spark plugs and the truck ran fine. I noticed it wasn’t misfiring. But after time it started to misfire again on fast acceleration, and increasing speeds of up to 40-65 and felt the engine misfiring. This morning when i drove it I was switching lanes accelerating then smelled gas fumes and like burnt wires. ? Thinking there’s a short circuit in the spark plug wires? It’s a 96 sr5 with 182,xxx miles. Help me!

  2. Kit, first double check ALL your fuses and make sure ALL your fuses are good. You can do this by using an Automotive Fuse Tester and making sure all of your fuses are not blown. If all of your fuses are good, your 1996 Toyota 4Runner may have a factory amplifier that needs to be turned on by your after market radio. The car stereo amplifier trigger wire has to be wired up to turn on your factory amplifier to output sound from your speakers. Hope this points you in the right direction. Good luck with your 1996 Toyota 4Runner stereo installation.

  3. I cut all wires off my 96 4runner factory amp, & now tried to hook up to my aftermarket deck but get no sound? … I got the deck to power on, then used the front left speaker wires (pink, and purple) but still have no sound? And now all my wires are cut from the harness and my signals do not work. Any suggestions? Help me!

  4. Sporty, technically you could connect your 1998 Toyota 4Runner amplifier turn on wire to the radio switched 12v+ wire. That way your amplifier is on whenever your 1998 Toyota 4Runner is on and off whenever your 1998 Toyota 4Runner is off. Just make sure to run an in-line fuse holder with a 1-amp fuse on the amplifier turn on wire. Hope this helps. Good luck with your 1998 Toyota 4Runner amplifier install.

i’m hooking up an amp to my stock radio (4runner) is it ok to splice into antenna trigger wire?

  6. I have just successfully (mostly) installed new speakers in my 98 4runner. However, the wiring to the left rear speaker seems to be dead. I have a good Pioneer stereo in the car now. I had it prof. installed last year. Is there an easy way to fix this? The front speakers are fully functional, but right now, the right rear speaker seems to have only bass. Also, I can no longer gain access to the fader control on the stereo to even try to send the sound to the rear speakers. Help!

  7. I recently installed a Pioneer deck into my 1998 Toyota 4Runner using a wire harness purchased from Radio Shack and now my dash lights won’t come on. I called Radio Shack and they told me to connect the orange wire with a white stripe to the red ignition wire and this hasn’t solved the problem. All it caused was to feed 12V back through the wiring system. Luckily no fuses were blown that I can tell. Is there a hidden secret that I don’t know about?

  8. you will need to remove the factory amp(small silver box located behind the deck) and hook up the new deck to the factory harness BEHIND the amp.

  9. John, your Toyota 4runner may have a factory amplifier that needs to be turned on by your after market radio. The car stereo amplifier trigger wire has to be wired up to turn on your factory amplifier. Unfortunately, we do not have this information but maybe someone from the Modified Life community can post that information here. Hope this helps. Good luck.

  10. i tried to install a new radio in my 4runner and got the radio to work bbut no sound will come through the speakers. I used trial and error to figure out the colors and there was some sound coming out for a while. Is it possible that i screwed the speakers up by hooking them up wrong?? Please help

  11. C, first check your clarion radio manual. It’ll probably be able to tell you want “amp guard” means. If you don’t have the manual, our best guess is that the radio is detecting a short somewhere between your radio and amplifier. Double check all your wiring and make sure no wires are exposed or touching bare metal. Hope this helps. Good luck.

  12. I’ve hooked up my 04 Clarion cd/mp3 deck, but the deck reads out “Amp Guard” and there’s no volume or any sound at all, and the antenna closes immediately after deck powers on. please help me before i spend $ on what could be an easy fix. thanks, C
