  1. Jon, double check ALL your fuses using a Automotive Fuse Tester because certain vehicles may have a wire tied into another circuit not labeled as car radio. You may have additional fuse boxes by the driver side of the dash, passenger side of the dash, driver kick panel, passenger kick panel, under the steering column or under the hood. If all of your fuses are good, you may have a short or loose connection on your amplifier turn on wire. Hope this helps. Good luck with your 1996 Volkswagen Cabrio radio troubleshooting.

  2. Just bought a 1996 vw cabrio for my daughter, with an oem radio. radio will not turn on at all. checked fuses in panel. is there another inline type fuse behind radio, or somewhere else, or is it possibly just dead.

  3. on my 96 cabrio we took out the radio, got the number off the side and the vin number, called the dealer and got the code. Turn on the key and radio, press mode and seek buttons at the same time, 1000 will display. If your code is 1139 press the 1 button once, the 2 button one, the 3 button 3 times and the 4 button 9 times then press mode and seek together again and hold them until the radio turns on. If you screw it twice up you have to wait an hour to try again. Pull up the parking break to shut of the headlights, the key must be on to reset the radio.

  4. Scott,

Here’s the information your requested about entering your unlock code. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Starting the Volkswagen Stock Radio Safe Mode Unlock Procedure:

Press the “AM/FM BAND SELECTOR” and the “SCAN BUTTON” together and hold them down until the display shows “SAFE” on the screen. If you did this correctly, the display will show “1000” and disappear. After the “1000” display goes out, use the station preset buttons to enter the factory code.

    Entering Your Radio Unlock Code:

Station preset 1 is used to enter the first digit of your unlock code.
Station preset 2 is used to enter the second digit of your unlock code.
Station preset 3 is used to enter the third digit of your unlock code.
Station preset 4 is used to enter the fourth digit of your unlock code.

If your unlock code is 1111, press station preset 1 button once to show a “1” on the display. Then press station preset 2 button 1 time to show a “1” on the display. Then press station preset 3 button 1 time to show a “1” on the display. Lastly, press station preset 4 button 1 time to show a “1” on the display.

Each time you press a station preset button, the number on the radio display will go up by 1. For example, if you press the station preset 1 button 4 times, a 4 will be displayed in the 1st position on the display. If you press the station preset 2 button 3 times, a 3 will be displayed in the 2nd position on the display.

    Finalizing the Radio Code Unlock:

Press the “AM/FM BAND SELECTOR” and the “SCAN BUTTON” together and hold them down until the word “Code” is displayed. Your radio should be unlocked now.

  5. I have 93 convert karm and i replaced the radio, i have the code but can not figure out how to prgram it. I have power because when i first plug it in it say “safe” then goes blank- power to the lights, but no display- it is my second radio and i know it is not the issue.
