  1. I have a 1996 Jetta Trek with a Premium Sound system and I am looking at installing an Alpine deck. The previous harness I bought for the install did not have the connector for the cars built in amp. I went to a car stereo install place and they said they would have to do an amp override which would cost me over $260; clearly I don’t want to waste my money on that. Is there a wiring harness that will work for my car or does it actually need an override done? Any help/suggestions are greatly appreciated – thanks!

  2. Hi, I have a 1995 Jetta 3 city. It never had a radio installed ever. I went ahead and put in an amp and put 2 speakers in the rear, however when i went to route the speaker wires to the front i realized the rubber tubing that the wires go through on the door was a socket that you plug in and screw tight. Im nervous that if i drill a hole through it my electronics in the door like the locks might not work. Any suggestions? Thanks for your time.

  3. I just purchased a 1997 vw golf. It needed a new battery. I put in new battery and the radio does not work. When I turn the car on the word “safe” flashes once and disappears. When I turn the key to acc mode, the word “safe” displays. I found the serial number & 4 digit code and brought to vw dealership. The dealership set my code in the acc position, and the radio works. But, when I turn the car on, the radio does not work. It only works in the acc position. Why? The dealership was not helpful from this point.

  6. Chanda, its sounds like your 1997 Volkswagen Jetta radio may be in safe mode or anti-theft mode. You will need a unlock code to get your radio working again. Radio security codes are usually written in your car manual or given to you when you purchase the vehicle. If you do not have the radio security code, you would have to obtain it from the local Volkswagen dealer. Hope this helps. Good luck with unlocking your 1997 Volkswagen Jetta radio.

  7. i have a 1997 VW jetta i installed the door speakers but in the back where the back headrest in the back window had factory speakers and it has aloooottt of wiring and it has a black piece to connect it to the factory speakers but the speakers i have has 2 wires both red and i was wondering if i should clip the black thing off with wire cutters and then try to twist the wires to the speaker but its so many colors would it work??

  8. i just bought a 97 jetta GT. It was at a local auction and I got it dirt cheap. Their was no radio in it.. Looks to have been pulled by previous owner. I wired up a new one. But get nothing. I checked all my wires and Im sure all is correct. I think it might have something to do with the anti theft system. I have no idea.. Any help?

  9. Chip, you would require Volkswagen Radio Removal Tools to remove your factory radio. If you look closely at your radio, there are small slits at each corner of your radio. These tools are slipped into those slits to release the radio. The radio then slides right out. Here are the VW Stereo Removal Tools you need:

    Hope this helps. Good luck.

  10. hey i have a 1997 golf and the stock seem the same but im trying to figure out how to take the deck out excatly…. cna u help at all?

  11. just want to say thanks. MAINTENANCE SUP AT MY VW DEALER GAVE ME BAD INFO, AND AFTER I READ THIS, I (ME AND MY NON TECHNICAL SELF!!!) WALKED OUT AND FIXED IT IN 10 MINUTES, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU

  12. I have a 1993 Vollkswagon Passt. I know how to unlock the radio (thanks to a comment already made on here) but the unlock code I was given from the previous owner of the car features the number 7 which is not on the preset number buttons.

Was this a mistake made by the previous owner or have I just not figured out how to enter anything beyond the 1-6 preset buttons?

  13. Carymcdon, we’re glad we could help you with your car stereo wiring diagram needs. Thanks for the car stereo wiring information contribution!

  14. Thank you for the clear and accurate information on clearing the SAFE mode in the Bose radio; there are a dozen other sites that ‘address’ the issue, but yours is the only one that posted an answer that worked!

BTW: I found that the stored fuel/injector algorithm goes South as well; but here in CA it is not a big issue unless you go to smog it, and they (may) fail your komputer readout for not having a program. Also, here in CA I believe the ‘default’ mode operates with more HP than the ‘stored curve’ mode! Oh yeah!

The only other interesting comment I picked up readarding ‘locked out’ radios is that if you throw the radio in the freezer overnight they will ‘lose’ the lockout issue; same as shortinga battery RAM I suppose.

    Thanks again!

  15. Chris, the anti-theft security feature of your stock radio will not affect your after market radio. You can go ahead and install your aftermarket radio. Hope this helps. Good luck.

  16. i have a 1997 jetta gl and it has the anti-theft radio is there any way of bypassing it to put a aftermarket radio in instead.

  17. Gary, if you don’t have the radio security code, you would have to obtain it from the dealer. Hope this helps. Good luck.

  18. I cannot un-lock the radio on my 97 jetta diesel car. It’s always in safe mode after I changed the battery. The car was sitting with a dead battery 3 months before I installed a new one. I’ve since take the radio out, and lots of numbers are on the back.. nothing makes sense to me. Can you help ?

  19. I have a 1997 Jetta and the alarm will not shut off. I am trying to enter the code but it isnt’ taking. What do I do, I can’t shut it off.

    CJ

  20. Okay, looking at the back of my stock radio, I see three plugs; the bottom one is obviously power, ground, etc, the middle one is obviously speakers…what’s the third (top) plug for? There are approx 4 pins that have two wires connected to tem, and anoter 4 or so pins with single wires…Is this tied into te car alarm, etc? Is it safe to leave unplugged?

  21. Yo steve sometimes the speaker covers arent meant to be removed and all you have to do is lift the carpet above the speakers which the grilles are attached to thats at least the way it happens in some cases, and that way you dont break your clips

  22. Adam,

Technically, you could connect your remote turn on wire to the radio switched 12v+ wire (Gray/Blue). That way your amplifier is on whenever the car is on and off your amplifier when your car is off. Just make sure to run an in-line 1-amp fuse on the remote turn on.

    Hope this helps. Good Luck.

  23. IM TRYING TO INSTALL A WIRING KIT FOR AN AMP AND SUB ON 1997 JETTA AND I CANT FIGURE OUT WHICH WIRE IS THE REMOTE WIRE. ALL I NEED IS WHAT COLOR THE WIRE IS SO I CAN HOOK IT UP. EMAIL ME IF YOU KNOW. [email protected]

  24. Sergio, it sounds like your cd changer magazine is jammed. Open the cd changer door and look for a small pin hole. If your cd changer has this pin hole, there is usually a small button inside it. This button is the reset button. Use the tip of a pen or the end of a paper clip and press the button. This should reset your cd changer and fix your problem.

Hope this helps and good luck.

  25. have a 2000 volkswagen jetta have an anti theft alarm. since I heve the car the cd player doesn’t play the cd but the radio and cassete it does work. it show a messege on the display that say error magazing.
do I need to unlock the cd?

  26. Steve, open your trunk and look on the underside of your rear deck lid. Check for screws and/or clips. Usually rear deck lid speaker covers have a fastener to hold them down. Hope this helps.

  27. A simple way i found to bypass the code was to dissattach all the wire form the back then plus them back in with the the blue one, followed by the brown set followed by the black set. it worked on my 99 jetta, hope that helps anyone who couldn’t figure out their code

  28. Im trying to replace the rear speakers on the back deck and am having trouble getting the covers off … is there a trick ? or do i just have to pry them off ?

  29. Mike, our guess is that your friend’s car has a Bose Audio System which uses its own enclosed system for audio output. Your best bet is to bypass the Bose system and install new wiring from the radio harness to the new speakers.

    Hope this helps.

  30. I was looking at installing some pioneer 6x9s in my friends jetta. As I was removing the factory speakers I noticed that there are 4 wires, instead of the usual two. Is the striped wire a neutral? If so, why does each speaker have 2 neutrals, seems a little overboard. Please let me know, asap. Thank you.

  31. Danny,

Your best bet is to check all of your fuses (not just the radio fuse). It sounds like you blew a fuse somewhere. Hope this helps.

  32. hey i was wiring my radio and somehow the fuse was still in for the radio and it sparked now when i turn on the acc the radio works but when i start the car the radio will not work is there a relyin there somewhere? thanks for any help you can give me

  33. Sorry we don’t have the color codes for the connectors. You would have to find a manual or schematics for the radio it connects to.

  34. Hey James,

I have the same car and we had the code but my husband threw it out by acident. We don’t have the code anymore. Could you tell me you Four Digt Code. it may not work because we have different serial numbers on the cars but it would be really help ful to try. Please Help…..

  35. James,

If you have the radio unlock code, follow these instructions to unlock your VW Bose Radio:

    1. Simultaneously press SEEK and < SCAN (the lower of the SCAN buttons) until 1000 appears on the radio screen. (Note: There is no single SCAN button on the radio.) 2. Input your unlock code using the radio preset buttons. 3. When your finished inputing your volkswagen radio unlock code press the SEEK and < SCAN buttons simultaneously until the display changes, then let go of the buttons, and after a few seconds, your radio should be functional. Hope this helps. Note: Feel free to use any information posted on Modified Life but keep in mind that all information here is provided as-is without any warranty of any kind.
