What is the difference between a premium vi 2003 jetta radio and a monsoon radio? Are they interchangable? thanks
I have a 2003 VW Jetta that I am trying to install an aftermarket radio into. However when I attach the power leads from the radio to the wiring harness and the ground line the radio does not turn on. I have tested the radio directly on a 12V supply and found that the radio does work, for some reason I can’t figure out is why the radio will not turn on with the wiring harness. I have tried various ways of testing the harness and the radio but I have found not fault with either. If you have any suggestions please email me. thank you, Joe
I have an 03 jetta with a monsoon, it says phone on the display and wont work. I want to put a different stereo in. is it as easy as it should be? like in older cars? oh and will it make my odometer shut off with the car too?
03 jetta, monsoon radio. factory radio. problem: install the radio, it works but we get no sound. We think it may be the amp. 1) where is the amp and where does it connect to the radio. 2) there is a connector next to the antenna connection, is that the amp?
thanks
Jeremiah, the power lead on the stock radio doesn’t offer enough power to power an aftermarket head unit. You’ll need to run a wire from the new HU power lead over to the fuse box and connect to one of the always on items.
George brooks, the monsoon amplifier is located in the trunk underneath the hat ledge. It is in a black cage.
Mark, thanks for the 2003 Volkswagen Jetta radio wiring information contribution!
How do I power (trigger) the factory Monsoon amp and should the RCA pre-amp leads be used for signal “out” of the aftermarket HU?
purchased a used 2003 Jetta 2.0L with 100,000 miles. Had to replace the with new battery. Now the monsoon radio turn on for about 1 hour then kicks off. The radio station and power stays on. However, the volume control does not work and no sound comes out the radio. When I turn on, sound comes on for like 10 seconds then kicks off again.
How do i if fix this? Does this have anything to do with me changing the battery? Is there a fuse or reset that needs to be changed?
Thanks,
Bob
Robert, what has happened is that the Monsoon radios have a anti theft lock on them. You will need to find the code to unlock your system (usually found in the owners manual) if you do not find the code you will have to contact you VW dealer and have them do this for you and this is because you unhooked the original battery.
I just purchased a 2003 Jetta Wagon with a Premium Cassette/ CD radio. It doesn’t have the Monsoon logo on the face of the unit. In the back of the car on the left side it has a plastic frame i guess for the CD changer. Above the CD changer is a smaller space for what equipment I don’t know? I was told that the car was prewired for a CD changer. It does have the wire bundle with a contector on the end. Do I have a Monsoon? If I don’t have a Monsoon system how hard would it be to up grade?
Thanks
Bonnie
I am looking to find out which wire is what on the factory amplifier on the monsoon system for a 2003 VW gti. I need to pull power and remote wire off that wiring harness. Thank you.
I have a 2003 VW Jetta and during a regular service visit to the VW dealer the repair people had to disconnect the battery. After doing this they for some reason pulled out the Monsoon stereo and broke the connector for the antenna (they deny breaking it). They gave me some song and dance about the antenna being bad. I have tested the antenna and it is not bad. I have tried several adapters/connectors to attach the antenna to the Monsoon stereo all with absolutely no effect. Any suggestions – Do I have to replace the antenna and wire just to get the right connector? Anyone? Thanks, David.
WE have an 03 jetta wagon with the “Premium 6” head unit and we think the Monsoon, but we’re not sure. In any case the head unit suddenly lost all power..we suspected a fuse, but checked the fuse block and didn’t find anything bad or marked for the radio. So we pulled the radio out and there’s a 10A fuse on the back of the radio that you access by pulling the connector block, but that fuse wasn’t bad either? Could it be the monsoon amp that’s keeping it from coming on? Seems like there’s 12v power at the connector B+ and Safe lugs. Not sure where else to look or if we’ve made things worse by unplugging the radio from this anti-theft power source? Help?!? =)
I have a 2003 Volkswagen GTI 1.8 Turbo with a Monsoon stereo. A few days ago the CD stopped working and when I pressed the CD button the first time after that, the message “CD ERROR 4” showed up. This message only appears the first time you press the CD button after disconnecting the battery. Is this some kind of a protection code? Is there a list of codes? Can this be fixed? Thank you very much, Oscar
I have a 2003 volkswagen jetta with a monsoon. The display says “phone” and the unit won’t function AT ALL. It still displays this after the key is turned off and removed. I had to pull the fuse to avoid running the battery down. I thought it may reset when I put the fuse back in but it didn’t. Is there a reset procedure or code for this problem? It just showed up this way one morning with no prior issues. Any ideas??
I have a 2003 jetta TDI, the radio works when you turn on the car but then it seems to have a bad conncetion with the antenna, the radio will just cut out and got to static on all channels some times it will come back and others it will not. What connections should I check and where?
Brian, your 2003 Volkswagen Jetta TDI has an amplified antenna that needs to be powered on when your radio is turned on. Make sure to use a:
Powered Antenna Adapter for 2003 Volkswagen Jetta
Hope this helps. Good luck with your 2003 Volkswagen Jetta stereo installation.
I have a 2003 Jetta 2.0L with the Monsoon radio system. The faceplate is bad and I want to replace it with, essentially, two single din radios (not one double din). I have actually already pulled out the radio as it wasn’t working properly and something needed to be done anyhow.
1) Is this even possible? Is the power requirement and fuse structure there to do so?
2) If it is possible, what wiring harnesses will I need? Will I have to, or want to, work the Monsoon amp into it? And does mine have the amplified antenna to worry about?
My 2003 Volkswagen Jetta radio volume is very low, even on max. However, the cassette and CD volumes sound great and get to the right volume. Is there something I can do with this? anyone know?
1st, thank you for the diagram. Second, I am swapping out my oem monsoon unit for an aftermarket double din. I have the volume and track controls on my steering wheel. I need to track down the pins used for those controls so that I can wire them into the remote of the aftermarket stereo, thus retaining the use of those buttons with an aftermarket unit. Can you help?
Jesse, if you’re installing an aftermarket radio into your 2003 Volkswagen Jetta and want to retain your steering wheel controls it is possible but it depends on the manufacturer of your aftermarket radio:
Steering Wheel Control Adapter for Alpine Radio
Steering Wheel Control Adapter for Blaupunkt Radio
Steering Wheel Control Adapter for Clarion Radio
Steering Wheel Control Adapter for Eclipse Radio
Steering Wheel Control Adapter for JVC Radio
Steering Wheel Control Adapter for Kenwood Radio
Steering Wheel Control Adapter for Pioneer Radio
Steering Wheel Control Adapter for Sony Radio
Steering Wheel Control Adapter for Valor Radio
If you have never installed car audio before, we advise you to take your car to an experienced mobile audio installer. Hope this helps. Good luck with your 2003 Volkswagen Jetta stereo installation.
