Robert, as far as we know, there are plenty of people who have installed an aftermarket stereo head unit while keeping the factory amp. The only thing you would have to figure out is which wire is the factory amplifier turn on wire. This is necessary to produce sound. Hope this helps. Good luck.

So what if i wanted to install an aftermarket stereo and keep the factory amp? What would i need? Heard various things with no real answers from vw owners

Punch, the 2005 Volkswagen Golf does not have any RCA inputs on the vehicle. You can however use a Volkswagen Factory Radio Auxiliary Interface to connect your Zune mp3 player. Here is the interface you need: Volkswagen Factory Radio Auxiliary Interface If you've never installed car audio before, we advise you to take your car to an experienced mobile audio installer. Before I go to the trouble of removing the stereo, can anyone tell me if there are any RCA inputs on it? A picture of the back of the thing would be great! I want to be able to plug my Zune into 3.5mm stereo to RCA cable.

Steve, most late model vehicles do not have rca outputs. You would have to install a line out converter. Here is the Line-Out Converter you need: Scosche 2-Channel Speaker to RCA Line Out Converter If you've never installed car audio before, we advise you to take your car to an experienced mobile audio installer.
