One question — I have a VR3 VR500CS-BT unit that has a wire for the ‘Dashboard Light Dimmer’, however with this connected to either the gray or brown wires listed here (and not the speaker wires!), the result is the same — the lights stay on fully illuminated, regardless of whther my dash lights are on, off, or dimmed.
I suppose it could be the unit. Any help?
Todd, make sure your settings on the radio itself are set to dim your dash lights. Most car radios (right out of the box) come set to illuminate at the brightest setting without regards to the dimmer wire. Go through your radio settings and set your illumination to dim with the dimmer wire. Hope this helps. Good luck.
I wired my amp, sub and speakers in my 2004 Grand Am. It takes about 4-8 seconds before my amp powers up (if it powers up at all) when I start my car. After driving for a minute it shuts off, or if I sit in my car and pump the brakes it shuts the amp off too. On warm days the amp usually stays on longer, but sometimes I’ll hit a bump in the road and the amp wil go on for a second or two, but usually it stays off when I’m driving and it has powered down. My ground is directly to metal, my power supply is 4 gage wire and is live, but I’m wondering if there is a problem with my remote in the original car radio??? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Dm, it sounds like your remote wire was not hooked up correctly. Pressing the brakes or hitting bumps shouldn’t prevent your amp from running. Take your remote wire and hook it up to your Accessory Switched 12v+ Wire. That way your amplifier is on whenever your 2004 Pontiac Grand Am is on and off whenever your 2004 Pontiac Grand Am is off. Just make sure to run an in-line fuse holder with a 1-amp fuse on the amplifier turn on wire. Hope this helps. Good Luck.
Pulled out my radio to un-jam a cd out of the cd player. Got the CD out and the player working fine but after I plugged everything back in noticed that the clock display was very dim. Can’t seem to figure it out. Any suggestion on getting the display to be fully illuminated. I have the basic radio that came with the car.
I have a factory stereo in my 2004 Grand Am. Neither of the back speakers work anymore? How do check the wiring to make sure nothing came loose? Or check for other problems.
Craig, it sounds like either your factory stereo has gone bad or the factory amplifier is faulty. It would take some installation know how to troubleshoot your stereo problem. I recently took my car to an audio dealership where the guy there told me that my OEM CD din does not have RCA out, and that i would have to buy a certain product ( i think it was called “RE-q”, which costs around 150$ ) if i was planning to install a separate amp. is this true, or was he just trying to upsale me?
The wiring diagram saved me, especially the part about the 12v switched wire. I just installed the radio and when it didnt turn on i of course was a little miffed because I do a spot freaking perfect install job on every radio I do. My only question is where should I run the wired to in the fuse box? I’ll probably figure it out soon but an answer might help still
I ran a inline fuse to the wiper blades on the inside driver side fuse box wiper blades only turn on when you start your car.

Hey! i purchased a 2004 grand am gt and i see the oem radio is not working. The guy that i bought the car from say the radio work once in a while. so i run a positive wire straight from the battery to the orange wire and the radio is working now but the clock on the radio itself where you should see what station is playing is not on, i wanna know if i am missing something. And if i should cut the orange wire to where ever its going and connect the wire that i run from the battery directly behind the radio? Thanks
I have a 04 Grand Am and I installed an aftermarket head unit. When I turn it on it turns on for a few seconds and then turns off and won’t turn back on. Is there a security issue I have to deal with or is it something else?

Roland, technically you could connect your 2004 Pontiac Grand Am amplifier turn on wire to the radio switched 12v+ wire. That way your amplifier is on whenever your 2004 Pontiac Grand Am is on and off whenever your 2004 Pontiac Grand Am is off. I am having a MAJOR MAJOR complication with my grand am. I purchased a wiring harness which the colors do not match up directly from the stocked wires that are in the back of the radio. I connected the wires properly (eg. battery, ignition, remote, ground, ect ect), i heard the radio making a sound when the key is turned on, but no lighting is coming from the actually aftermarket head unit what so ever. I’ve worked on it for hours upon hours, and looked at many websites, but nothing seems to help me figure this problem out. There are too many colors back there and it’s confusing the h*ll out of me, i feel I’m in a crayola box! anyone got any ideas?

Dovi, you may have mixed up the battery constant and accessory switched wires. The battery constant always sends power to the radio to save your radio stations and other audio settings. The accessory switched wire sends power to your radio only when the key is in the ignition and your 2004 Pontiac Grand Am is on.
