I’m installing a aftermarket stereo in my daughters 1986 cressida station wagon and I can not get the speakers to work. is there some sort of module in between the speaker and radio head?

Mel, are you talking about front speakers or rear speakers? Did you use an interface wiring harness? (that’s a set of 2 cables with connectors on one end to fit the connectors you disconnected when you removed the stock stereo). The other free ends are used to connect to the aftermarket stereo. There is an amplifier for the rear speakers. It’s mounted on the bottom of the rear deck, accessible from the trunk. The amplifier can be used if you use the low level output from the aftermarket stereo. You should check with the dealer where you bought the stereo. If you feed high level audio into the amplifier the output will be seriously distorted. Use the information above and check to see if you have the wiring correct. Hope this helps, William.
